In a world racing to construct bigger and faster, he chose to pause and ask: What about the Earth beneath our feet?
The cement industry forms the backbone of modern civilization — yet it contributes nearly 8% of global CO₂ emissions. In 2008, Dr. Natarajan stepped into a modest laboratory with a bold vision: to discover an alternative material chemistry that could seamlessly integrate into this 200-year-old industry, cut down emissions, and pave the way for a more sustainable future.
A Vision Turns into a Movement
The research soon went beyond carbon. Cement also consumes enormous amounts of water.
By developing curing-free technologies, Dr. Natarajan reimagined construction to save billions of liters of water — while pioneering the use of industrial by-products such as fly ash, mining waste, and slag, transforming what was once discarded into valuable, high-performance building solutions.
What began as a solitary pursuit soon became a shared mission.
A team of innovators, engineers, and entrepreneurs joined forces — united by the belief that science can be a tool for environmental healing.
